What I Learned about Community During a Solo Trip to Roatán

This Christmas, I took a solo trip to the Island of Roatán. I meditated in the pouring rain, went diving with sea turtles, sang songs with the locals, and stayed up until 2 am looking at the stars.

It was more than a vacation. I learned a lot about community and myself along the way. Here are three things I took away from the experience:

1) Community is Bigger than you Think
I traveled to Roatán alone, but I never felt lonely. Everywhere I went, I found friends: fellow explorers, adventurers, and lovers of life. It reminded me that community is about more than your geography or college alma mater. It’s about what you believe in and your vision for the future. Shared passion connects us in ways that go beyond the surface level.

2) Growth Happens in the Uncomfortable
Traveling solo was new for me. If I’m being honest, it was a little strange at first. I’ve always traveled internationally with a group, and going alone was uncomfortable. But once I let go of the initial awkwardness, I felt freedom (bliss, even!) Growth hides in the moments we resist, and I’m learning to lean into them rather than shy away. Sometimes, the greatest reward is hiding where you least expect it.

3) Community Starts with Connection
Roatán wasn’t just a getaway…the relationships I built will have a lasting effect on my business. I met biotech executives and swimwear designers, platinum award winning musicians and mobility changemakers. These type of organic connections, formed by chance but bound by shared values, are often the most impactful.

It’s a great big world out there! I can’t wait to explore more of it in 2025. Here’s to leaning into it, savoring it, and building something beautiful.
