Building Communities That Last: Structure, Ownership & Trust

Almost 20 years ago, I joined a group of entrepreneurs thinking it would help my business. Instead, it changed my life.
They’ve been there through the birth of my son two months early, divorce, selling my company, and starting a new one. Today, they’re family. That’s what lasting community looks like.
As Simon Sinek says, true communities are defined by “people who grow together.”
When it comes to crowdfunding, this depth of connection separates successful campaigns from failed ones. The strength of your relationships matters more than the size of your network.
Three elements that create lasting communities:
1. Create Structure Everyone Can Count On
Set up consistent ways to connect, clear expectations, and shared processes. When people know what to expect, they can focus on each other instead of figuring out logistics.
2. Give People Real Ownership
Let members actually shape things. Have them lead sessions, organize events, tackle problems together. When people help build something, they’re invested in keeping it alive.
3. Build Real Trust
Make space for honest conversations and real support. Show up when it matters, communicate openly, and don’t avoid the hard conversations. Trust happens through what you do, not what you say.
The communities that change lives foster growth through shared commitment and mutual investment.
